  • Birth*: Peter Reiss was born on 17 January 1867 at Sheboygan, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, USA.1,2
  • Occupation*: He was the Secretary of Reiss and Company Coal Company on 21 November 1883.3
  • Employment*: He became President in 1902 at The C. Reiss Coal Company.4
  • Biography*: Peter Reiss, a son of Clemens Reiss, deceased, well deserves a place in this volume as one of the representative and successful citizens of Sheboygan county, being a leading factor in business circles of Sheboygan as the president of The C. Reiss Coal Company. His birth occurred in Sheboygan ion the 17th of January, 1867, and his education was obtained at the Holy Name Catholic school here. When a youth of thirteen he put aside his text-books and entered the grocery store of Herman Herbst, receiving a dollar a week for his services. Subsequently he was employed in the German Bank for two years and on the expiration of that period began assisting his father in the conduct of the coal business which the latter was carrying on under the name of Clemens Reiss & Company. At the time of the incorporation of The C. Reiss Coal Company in 1888, he was made secretary, and in June, 1896, following his father's demise, he was elected vice president. In 1902 he was chosen president of the concern, and in this capacity has ably directed its interests to the present time. As above stated, The C. Reiss Coal Company owns docks at Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Green Bay, Superior, Escanaba and Ashland, and conducts a wholesale and retail business embracing the entire northwest. Peter Reiss has likewise acted as chief executive officer of the Wisconsin Transportation Company since its organization. The steamer "Peter Reiss" and the tug "Peter Reiss" bears his name. His business record is one of which he has every reason to be proud, as it chronicles his advancement from a humble position in the commercial world to one of prominence and success. He has traveled extensively in America and aborad and has thus gained knowledge of various regions.
On the 21st of November, 1893, in Sheboygan, Mr. Reiss was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Pape, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Pape, who have resided in this city for many years and an extended sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this work. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Reiss have two daughters, Carita and Gertrude. The mother is prominent in charitable, musical and social circles of Sheboygan.
In politics Mr. Reiss is a stanch republican, but his time and energies are entirely demanded by his business interests and he has therefore taken no active part in public affairs. Fraternally he is identified with the Knights of Columbus and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, while his religious father is indicated by his membership in the Holy Name Catholic church. He also belongs to the Union League Club of Chicago. He has remained a resident of Sheboygan from his birth to the present time and has won many warm friends in the city. His business record is an interesting and creditable one. It is true that he entered upon a business already established, but in enlarging and controlling this many a man of less resolute spirit would have failed. His record proves, too, that success is not a matter of genius, as held by some, but is rather the outcome of sound judgment, experience and indefatigable energy.5
  • Death*: He died on 5 September 1926 at age 59.
In Memoriam - Peter Reiss, eldest son of Clemens Reiss, became President of the company in 1902, after having been with the company in various capacities and offices. Keen insight into present day business activities won for him places on the directorships of various large corporations. Mr. Reiss held the office of President of this company until September 5th, 1926, the date of his death.

Mary Rita Rice1

F, b. 12 December 1912, d. 23 December 2003
  • Birth*: Mary Rita Rice was born on 12 December 1912.1
  • Married Name: Her married name was Madigan.1
  • Marriage*: She married Michael J. Madigan, son of Michael P. Madigan and Margaret M. Drew, on 19 April 1941.1,2
  • Death*: Mary Rita Rice died on 23 December 2003 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA, at age 91; Chicago Tribune, December 25, 2003, page 24.
Mary Rita Madigan, mother of Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan, died Tuesday, December 23, in a nursing home on the Southwest Side after a long illness.
Mrs. Madigan, 90, spent most of her life as a homemaker and had worked as an accountant for Brogan Coal and Ice Co.
A lifelong resident of the Southwest Side, Mrs. Madigan had lived until recently with her daughter after her husband, Michael J. Madigan, a city worker, died in the 1970s. Mrs. Madigan moved into a nursing home a couple of months ago as her health began to fall, said Steve Brown, a spokesman for the family.
Though she avidly followed her son's chosen profession of politics, Mrs. Madigan was not necessarily political herself. Her political work, instead, consisted of helping her son in the beginning stages of his career, before his rise to become Illinois House speaker and chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party.
"She was active in Michael's early campaigns, making calls and such," recalled her daughter, Marita McGivney. "Later, she kept up on current events like no one else I knew."
Among friends and relatives, Mrs. Madigan was known for something much less partisan and much more appetizing to some people than Democratic politics.
:She made great chocolate chip cookies that were the favorites in the neighborhood," McGivney said.
Survivors also include five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Among her grandchildren is Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Speaker Madigan's daughter.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday in St. Adrian Church, 7000 S. Fairfield Ave. Chicago.
Mass will be said at noon Saturday in St. Adrian's.
