  • Note*: Helen M. McIntyre interviewed by Elaine M. Beaudoin in April, 2006.
E: What are your first memories of your Aunt Nannie? How old were you?
H: The first I remember Aunt Nannie was when I was 4 years old and we went to visit her in Denver Colorado where Uncle George was transferred. She was nice and pleasant. There was a little cat in her backyard running around all the time. I called it the MOW and went out and played with it every day. She would look out and laugh at me.

E: Did you ever visit Aunt Nannie’s home? What was her home like? Do you remember any of her addresses?
H: I visited her in Denver when I was 4. They owed a nice brick bungalow with a big back yard and a nice front porch where we would sit every evening. The view was very pretty.

E: Did you ever visit her in Denver or San Francisco?
H: I also visited when I was 16. Ruth had to have her appendix out and she wanted the operation to take place in Denver. She asked my Mother if I could go with her, which I did. I stayed a month and enjoyed it all. Aunt Nannie was nice and Uncle George was a lot of fun. I never got to see her in San Francisco. They rented a high 3rd floor and when she looked out her from windows she could see the Golden Gate Bridge.

E: Who did Aunt Nannie marry? What do you remember about her husband? What did he do for work?
H: She married George Rooney. I really like him. He was so nice and friendly. He had a great sense of humor. He worked for the Denver Rio Grand Railroad. He was transferred to Denver when Ruth was 3 and transferred to San Francisco about 20 years later.

E: How did her husband die? Where did he die?
H: He died in San Francisco. He was so happy when he was made Vice President. He was going to have his own office with his name on the door but he only lasted in his new office about 3 days. One night he and Aunt Nannie were having dinner. He said he didn’t feel good and dropped dead at the table. Ruth and my mother went out to San Francisco to help Aunt Nannie come back to Chicago. She brought Uncle George back here and he was buried in All Saints Cemetery.

E: Did you spend time with her daughter Ruth when you were young? What did you do? H: Ruth and I were always friends. She was almost 9 years older than me and always played with me when I was little. She was always at all our get-togethers and when I was in my teens she would invite me over to her apartment on North Sheridan Road. When I married I entertained a lot and she was always there. Lots of times she would call Larry and up and take us out to dinner.
E: Do you remember spending holidays with Aunt Nannie? Which ones? Any particular memories about them?
H: Aunt Nannie and Uncle George only visited us in the summer. We never saw them on Thanksgiving or Christmas. When Uncle George died she lived in Chicago and we would see her then at all the holidays. Before she moved to Chicago I remember always getting a real nice Christmas present from her.

E: Do you remember her being ill? Or, her wake and funeral?
H: She always seemed very peppy and healthy. She was living with Ruth and suddenly decided to get a job at Fields as a clerk to help Ruth out with the bills – although Ruth didn’t want her to. She worked at Fields about 4 or 5 years and it was getting too much for her so she quit. One day she told Nell she was putting on weight because her stomach was getting big. It just kept getting bigger and bigger and she was slowing p. Ruth made her go to the doctor. The doctor said she had ovarian cancer and operated. She was in the hospital about 2 weeks and then she died. She is buried next to Uncle George at All Saints Cemetery.

E: What funny things do you remember about Aunt Nannie?
H: I really don’t remember anything funny. Aunt Mae was the funny one. Aunt Nannie was just pleasant and nice. She had a nice figure and always walked very straight. She had red hair and blue eyes and a nice smile.

E: Do you remember any sad times with Aunt Nannie?
H: Uncle George had died in March and Aunt Nannie was her living with Ruth. In December she was at Nell’s Christmas Eve Party. My Father loved to play our player piano and sing. He started to sing “Silent Night” and Aunt Nannie yelled “Oh, no.” and started to cry hysterically and ran into my bedroom. Ruth followed her to calm her down. Aunt Nannie said the song reminded her of George.

E: Did your mother, Nell Sullivan, spend much time with her? What did they do together?
H: Mother, Aunt Mae and Aunt Nannie spent a lot of time together going to lunch, visiting each others houses, getting together for the holidays.

E: Shall we do Uncle John and Uncle Harry next?
    H: Yes.22
