    DIES AT HIS HOME
    Long in Chicago Public Life; Burial Saturday.
    Charles J. Vopicka, widely known Chicagoan and former diplomat, died suddenly of a heart attack in his home at 431 Oakdale avenue late Tuesday night, a few hours after he attended the Winnetka funeral services for Mrs. Anna Wilmarth Ickes, wife of Secretary of the Interior Ickes. He was 77 years old.
    Upon his return home from the funeral Mr. Vopicka complained of feeling ill, members of the family said. A daughter, Mrs. William H. Stevenson called physicians, but Mr. Vopicka sank rapidly and died at 11:45 p.m.
    Mrs. Vopicka was notified of his death at Lake cora, Mich., where they had been spending a vacation , and whence he had returned for the Ickes rites.
    Funeral services for Mr. Vopicka will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Pilson hall, 1812 South Ashland avenue. . Burial will be in the Bohemian national cemetery.
    Active in Civic Affairs
    Born in Bohemia, where he obtained his education, Mr. Vopicka came to the United States in 1880 and settled a year later in chicago, where he organized a banking and real estate business. Later he founded the Atlas Brewing company, being chairman of the board when he died.
    Entering actively into the affairs of his adopted city, Mr. Vopicka became a member of the school board in 1901, served on the board of local improvements in 1902, and in 1904 was the Democratic candidate for congress from the Fifth district. Two years later he was a member of the chicago charter convention. Still later, 1927 to 1930, he again was a member of the board of education.
    In Balkans During War.
    In 1913 Mr. Vopicka was appointed envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Rumania, Serbia, and Bulgaria, and served in the turbulent Balkans during the world war. For a time he served as neutral diplomatic representative of the United States, England, Italy, Germany, Russia, Serbia, Rumania, and Turkey. Resigning from the diplomatic service in 1920 he was awarded the order of "Mare Cruce" by Rumania and the Order of the White Eagle by Servia in recognition of his work. An account of his Balkan experiences was published in a book.
    Member of Many Clubs.
    In addition to being a member of the Illinois Manufacturers' association and other business groups, Mr. Vopicka belonged to the chicago Athletic association, the South shore Country club, the Iroquois club, of which he was former president; Ceska Beseda, Beach View club, and the Southmoor Country club.
    Besides his widow, the former Victoria Kubin, and Mrs. Stevenson, he is survived by five other daughters, Mrs. Edward M. Kralovec, Mrs. Jerome Schlesinger, Mrs. Thomas J. Doyle, Mrs. Gordon W. Dougherty, and Mrs. Raymond Hockmuth.
