  Leonard Sullivan, the 13 year old son of William R. Sullivan of Maywood, was drowned yesterday at South Haven, Mich., after a girl cousin had made a futile effort to rescue him.
  The girl was Miss Genevieve Colby, the 18 year old daughter of Mrs. Rose L. Colby, 6117 Greenwood avenue. Her father was the late Col. Francis T. Colby of the Seventh regiment. The boy had gone in bathing with her, and when he was seized with cramps she started out after him. When she had almost reached him his head disappeared and she fainted.
  Several theatrical persons were strolling along the beach, and as he saw Miss Colby throw up her hands Hooks Palmer, a singer, plunged into the water with his clothing on. He waded to the girl, but had difficulty in carrying her senseless body to the shore. Two other theatrical men, "Bobbie" Streath and Ray Jackson, plunged into the water in an effort to find the boy's body, and after a long search it was recovered.

  Chicago Boy Drowns; Aunt Sinks in Rescue -- Miss Genevieve Colby Saved by Singer While Trying to Aid Nephew.
  
  Leonard Sullivan, thirteen years old, son of William R. Sullivan of Maywood, superintendent of the Sullivan Oil Company at 413 Wells street, was drowned in the lake at South Haven, Mich., yesterday. But for the promptness and bravery of Hooks Palmer, a Chicago singer, filling an engagement at a South Haven theater, the accident would have resulted in a double tragedy, when Miss Genevieve Colby, aunt of the drowned boy, became unconscious, while swimming about the spot where she had last seen the boy.
  Without waiting to throw of his clothing, Palmer jumped into the heavy surf and went to Miss Colby's assistance. She had gone under when he reached her, but Palmer dived and brought her to the surface.
  He had a hard battle to reach shore with Mis Colby, but finally managed to do so in an exhausted condition, and had to be dragged from the breakers by those on shore.
  The accident occurred only a short time before the arrival of the boy's father, who went to South Haven yesterday to attend a family reunion. It was not until he reached there that he became aware of the tragedy that changed rejoicing into mourning. Charles J. Sullivan, an uncle of the drowned boy, was found at Muskegon by telegraph and he hastened to South Haven.
  According to accounts that reached Chicago last night, Leonard, who was an expert swimmer for a lad of his years, ventured out too far and was taken with cramps. Before Miss Colby could reach him he had gone down for the last time.
  Robert Streath and Ray Jackson of Chicago took part in the search for the boy's body, which was recovered and carried to the Sullivan cottage before the arrival of the father.
  The family, consisting of Mr.. and Mrs. Sullivan and a younger son, left for Chicago last night, accompanying the body, according to dispatches from South Haven.
  Miss Colby is the daughter of Mrs. Rose L. Colby, a well-known educator and former president of the Catholic Writers' Guild and widow of the late Colonel Colby of the Seventh Regiment. She lives at 6146 Greenwood avenue.

  Obituary: "Death of Mrs. Connor" On Tuesday, the 15th inst., Mrs. Anna Colfour, wife of James Connor, died at her home, corner of Lake street and Ridge avenue, aged 63 years. Some weeks since she visited her daughter in Chicago and while there was prostrated with an attack of typhoid pneumonia. Recovering sufficiently to return to Evanston, as it was supposed, she was again taken ill and the former disease was followed by aneurism of the artery of the left limb, and the attending physician found it necessary to amputate that member. The operation was performed, but with the previous sickness and the shock of the amputation, she died within half an hour.
  Mrs. Connor was born in County Wexford, Ireland in 1821. She married in 1842, and came to this country and settled in Evanston, whence her husband had preceded her two years before, and where they have lived every since. Five children, survive this mother, three of whom, James C., Thomas and John are well known here.
  The funeral services took place Thursday morning from St. Mary's Church. The Rev. Father Donahue officiated, and requiem high mass was celebrated. The interment took place later at Calvary Cemetery. The husband and children have the sympathy of many warm friends in this village. Evanston Index, April 19, 1884, page 2.
