Mary Rita Madigan, mother of Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan, died Tuesday, December 23, in a nursing home on the Southwest Side after a long illness.
Mrs. Madigan, 90, spent most of her life as a homemaker and had worked as an accountant for Brogan Coal and Ice Co.
A lifelong resident of the Southwest Side, Mrs. Madigan had lived until recently with her daughter after her husband, Michael J. Madigan, a city worker, died in the 1970s. Mrs. Madigan moved into a nursing home a couple of months ago as her health began to fall, said Steve Brown, a spokesman for the family.
Though she avidly followed her son's chosen profession of politics, Mrs. Madigan was not necessarily political herself. Her political work, instead, consisted of helping her son in the beginning stages of his career, before his rise to become Illinois House speaker and chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party.
"She was active in Michael's early campaigns, making calls and such," recalled her daughter, Marita McGivney. "Later, she kept up on current events like no one else I knew."
Among friends and relatives, Mrs. Madigan was known for something much less partisan and much more appetizing to some people than Democratic politics.
:She made great chocolate chip cookies that were the favorites in the neighborhood," McGivney said.
Survivors also include five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Among her grandchildren is Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Speaker Madigan's daughter.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday in St. Adrian Church, 7000 S. Fairfield Ave. Chicago.
Mass will be said at noon Saturday in St. Adrian's.
