A year later, three men from the neighborhood --- Peter J. Mulvaney, P. Frank Combiths and Frank Kelley --- met with Archbishop James Quigley and made their case for a new parish.
"He agreed. And the new parish was established on January 3, 1912, with Father Peter F. Shewbridge as pastor. It was named for St. Gertrude the Great, a German mystic and theologian from the 13th century and the only female saint know as "the Great." According to Peter M. Brost, one of the initial group of parishioners, that name was chosen to honor Father Shewbridge's mother.
"Five day later, the parish faced its first sorrow. Peter Mulvaney, one of the men who had met with Archbishop Quigley, died. His funeral was at St. Ita."

General Foreman of the Registry Division, and a charter member of Branch No. 14, N. A. S. P. E., died January 8, 1912. His deep and untiring interest in the service was indirectly the cause of his death; although taken ill December 15th he refused to give up until the holiday rush of mail had been disposed of, when it was found his condition was beyond medical assistance.
Those with whom he was closely associated well remember his bright and cheerful disposition under all circumstances; his kindness and fair dealing to his fellow employees made him one whose companionship was much desired and one who was beloved by all who knew him, and although removed from our midst his memory will linger with us.
At the regular meeting of Branch No. 14, held January 22d, the following resolutions were adopted:
Whereas, It has please Divine Providence to remove from our midst our late associate, Peter J. Mulvaney, it is with deep sorrow we are called upon to mourn his loss, and,
Whereas, During his long service in the Chicago Post Office he was endeared to us by his ever cheerful and helping spirit, therefore, be it
Resolved, That while bowing to the Divine Will we deeply deplore the loss of our associate, and be it further
Resolved, That we extend to the breaved family our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of affliction, and that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the records of this Association.
