Kathleen Marie Thank you so much for all this information everyone! I recently read the book "Brooklyn", a novel about a young woman who moves to the U.S. and have been asked by friends to share Grandma Sally's story at our next book club meeting (this weekend). There are so many similarities to Grandma Sally's and Grandpa Bill's stories! I know Grandma was in England for a period of time during WWII. Does anyone happen to know the name of the dance hall where they first met? Also, what church were they married in? Thank you!!!!

    Ann Gilger Knudsvig
Ann Gilger Knudsvig My understanding: Grandma lived in Sussex in a convent, helping/teaching children and Grandpa lived in Birmingham He worked in a munitions factory and helped run civil air patrol. When the nazis bombed, he'd help people get to the fallout shelters, when he was on duty. If he wasn't on duty, he'd stay in his bed during the bombing because the babies crying in the shelters kept him awake.

    Mary Gilger Korrison
Mary Gilger Korrison When Grandma came to the US, she arrived on a steamer much like the character in Brooklyn. She lived with her father, James Ruane, for a short period of time. He was still running a CTA streetcar on Madison Avenue. He retired and returned to Ireland shortly after I was born in 1951. He was my godfather. When she got married, she wore Alice Meehan's wedding dress. I believe she lived with the Meehans at this time.

    Mary Gilger Korrison
Mary Gilger Korrison I believe they were married at St. Alphonsus on Lincoln on October 15, 1949. During the Mass celebration, Grandma was on her way to place flowers by the St. Mary statue only to notice that Grandpa was standing on her dress. I am sure everyone had a good laugh about that. (I may have a few pics of their wedding which I will post).6
