- Note*: Elaine M. Beaudoin interviewed Helen McIntyre regarding her Uncle John. E: What are your first memories of your Uncle John? How old were you?
H: Nana owned a 2-flat on Fillmore St. My mother, father, Tom and I lived on the second floor. I was about three and I remember him coming up to our house and sitting on the back porch swing with my father. I always went out and sat with them.
E: Was Uncle John in the army? What stories do you remember about him and the service/war?
H: All I remember is that he was gone a couple of years. He served in France. He learned a lot of French and when he came home he would tease me by talking French to me. I learned a couple of French words from him.
E: Uncle John lived with Nana for some time. Do you remember visiting with him and Nana? Anything you remember about the visits?
H: We were visiting Nana often. Nana always had Thanksgiving and we would all get together. I would see Uncle John when he wasn’t working.
E: At one time, Uncle John worked with Uncle Harry. Tell me about the two of them working together.
H: Uncle John was Uncle Harry’s bartender. He was very friendly with all the customers and they all came in to see him. He would give them free drinks and Uncle Harry got mad at him and fired him so he got a job at another bar down the block. All his pals stated to go where Uncle John worked.
E: When did John get his own place? Where did Uncle John live? Did you ever visit Uncle John’s home? What was his home like?
H: Uncle John lived with Nana at 4800 W. Quincy St. I believe when she died he stayed there until he moved to Hayward, Wisconsin.
E: Besides working with Uncle Harry, what other kinds of jobs did Uncle John have?
H: I think he was a plumber until Uncle Harry asked him to be his bartender.
E: Who did Uncle John marry? How old was he when he got married? What do you remember about her? Was she married before. Did she have any children?
H: He was in his 50s. Her name was Mary; I don’t remember her last name. Uncle John met her when they both worked at Uncle Harry’s tavern. Later on they started to date.
E: Do you remember spending holidays with Uncle John? Which ones? Any particular memories about them?
H: He was always at Nellie’s for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. And Aunt Mae’s for Christmas. He was always nice to be with.
E: He moved to Hayward, Wisconsin. Do you know why he moved there? Did you ever visit him there?
H: I was never there. But, Mary had moved up to Hayward, Wis. They got married and he moved up there.
E: What other stories do you remember about Uncle John?
H: Nothing special except that he was a very nice man with a great sense of humor.
E: Do you remember him being ill? Or, his wake and funeral?
He lived to be about 94 years old in Hayward, Wis. We didn’t attend his wake or funeral.
E: What funny things do you remember about Uncle John?
H: When he lived on Fillmore St., I would always run down stairs to see Uncle John. I called him Uncle “Shan.” I was about four and one day I went down to see him. He was in the kitchen eating his lunch. They were pigtails. He said hello and waved the pigtail at me. I screamed and ran back upstairs. I told my mother he was eating worms and was going to have one bit me.
E: Do you remember any sad times with Uncle John?
H: No, he was always fun!
E: Did your mother, Nell Sullivan, spend much time with him? What did they do together?
H: Just when she visited Nana or had a special party.
E: What else do you remember about Uncle John?
H: One summer evening he and my father were sitting on the swing on our back porch. They were drinking beer. I said I was thirsty and wanted some. My father said “no.” My Uncle John said “oh have a drink of mine.” I did and it was so horrible I spit it out. I started to cry and he started to laugh. I’ve hated beer ever since.
E: Can you physically describe him?
H: About 5 foot 7 inches. Straight dark brown hair. Brown eyes. Full of fun, always making jokes and teasing me. Very nice looking and friendly.
E: Can you describe his wife Mary?
H: Petite, about 5 foot 2 inches. Dark hair, attractive.
E: What else do you remember about Mary? What was she like? Do you know her maiden name?
H: I really didn’t know anything about Mary. Not her last name or maiden name. I saw her when she worked for Uncle Harry but never got to know her real well.14 - Blog*: He was mentioned in a blog at http://madiganthompson.blogspot.com Madigan/Thompson Genealogy Blog on 12 March 2010.11
