Bridget Cawley

F, b. circa 1840, d. 18 December 1919
  • Birth*: Bridget was born at County Sligo, Ireland, circa 1840. The 1901 Census notes that Bridget Walsh was head of family and a widow age 61. It states that she owned the farm which consisted of a private dwelling and 2 additional buildings. She could not read or write, but could speak both Irish and English. She was a farmer so she must have taken over the family farm when her husband, Jack Walsh, died. In 1901 her sons John and James were living on the farm and were not married. There was also a daughter, Anney, who was stated as being 22 at the time of the census. She could read and write. Anney was a funeral servant and spoke English..1
  • Married Name: As of 14 February 1857,her married name was Walsh.2,3
  • Marriage*: She married John "Jack" Walsh at Knockahoney, Kilmacteige Parish, County Sligo, Ireland, on 14 February 1857. John Cawley and James Kilmartin were witnesses at the marriage. In the Kilmateigue Parish Marriage records it notes Bridget and John as 4th & 4th, as in they were related. 4th and 4th means they were first cousins!.2,3
  • Occupation*: Bridget Cawley was Farmer on 13 April 1901.4
  • Residence*: She lived on 13 April 1901 at Knockahoney, Sligo, Ireland. Bridget was 61 in the 1901 Irish Census making her born c1839-1840.5
  • Name Variation: As of 1911, Bridget Cawley was also known as Walshe.6
  • Biography*: The 1911 Irish Census states that Bridget Cawley Walsh gave birth to 9 children with 7 currently living.7
  • Occupation: She was (an unknown value) on 2 April 1911 at Knockahoney, Kilmacteige Parish, County Sligo, Ireland.7
  • Residence: She lived on 2 April 1911 at Knockahoney, Sligo, Ireland.7
  • Death*: She died on 18 December 1919 at Cashel, Aclare, Tubbercurry, County Sligo, Ireland. This is believed to be the death registration of Bridget, but not proven. She is the correct age, 80. She is a widow of a farmer, John Walsh. Her oldest son is named Patt and a Patt Walsh, son, was present at death. The discrepancy is she died in Cashel, not Knockahoney. I do not know where her son Patrick was living in 1919.
Someone has also determined this is the death record of Bridget Cawley on FamilySearch, however no other proof is given.8

He is occupying the property adjacent to the Walsh property which Patrick O'Hara currently (2021) owns. Patrick told Elaine Beaudoin in 2011, while standing on the Walsh (now O'Hara) property that Bridget Cawley lived on this farm next to the Walshes with her brother Anthony prior to marrying John Walsh in 1857. Anthony's father is James Walsh on Anthony's baptismal record July 17, 1849 at St. Attracta's parish in Tourlestrane.
