  • Note*: Interview with Helen Sullivan McIntyre by Elaine M. Beaudoin. E: What are your first memories of your Aunt Mae? How old were you?
H: I was about 4 or 5, she was always over at the house. I liked her, she was nice and friendly and pretty. She always made me laugh. She was blond and a lot of fun. She liked to have a drink now and then. She never let anyone get away with anything. She would tell them off. She was real nice, I liked her.
E: Did you ever visit Aunt Mae’s home? What was her home like? Do you remember any of her addresses?
H: Yes, I remember 2712 W. Adams Street. She lived there with Mrs. Cooley and Burdette. It was a red brick building. I think they rented. Her home was always neat and clean. It was an upstairs/downstairs, single family red brick with a wooden front porch. It was nice and big.
They were having a fit because they saw Blacks walking down the street. Burdette took a walk and he said. “I walked a half block down and there was a Black man sitting on his porch. And, I walked to Western and there were Black men.” and right away Mae said she wanted to move. So she and Burdette moved over to Franklin Boulevard. Can’t remember the address. I think that is where they both died.
E: Who did Aunt Mae marry?
H: She was married to Claude Cooley - her first husband. He worked for the railroad and one day he fell down coming down the steps on the train. He slipped and fell hitting his leg on the side of the steps. He went to the hospital and died of blood poisoning. He died young, he was only about 39. I cried when I heard about it. He used to come over and play cards with Pops. He was good looking and I always liked him. He was about 6 foot two. When he died I was only about seven and I felt real bad. A few years later she married Burdette Harbison. Aunt Mae never had any children.
E: How long between Claude dying and Aunt Mae marrying Burdette?
H: Oh, it seems a long time, maybe about 15 years. I forgot how she met him, but they were going together and then they got married.
    E: Was Burdette working?
    H: I think so.
    E: Who lived with her?
H: Mrs. Cooley was still living with Aunt Mae. So when they got married, Burdette moved in with Aunt Mae and Mrs. Cooley.
E: What did you call Mrs. Cooley?
H: I called her Dodo. I don’t know why I called her that, but one day she came over to our house and I said “Hello, Dodo.” And, she laughed and said “What a name you’ve given me.” But I don’t know why I called her that.
E: How long did Mrs. Cooley live with Aunt Mae and Burdette?
H: She lived there until she died. Aunt Mae didn’t get along too well with Mrs. Cooley. Mrs. Cooley belonged to the Eastern Star. She never missed a meeting; they were always on a Wednesday. They had this beautiful summer luncheon. Mrs. Cooley had the flu and they called the doctor and he said she was very sick and she should stay in bed for a week and not go out. Well, she stayed in bed for about 4 days, and one day she was coming down from her bedroom and she was all dressed to go out. Aunt Mae asked her where she was going and Mrs. Cooley said “I’m going down to Wieboldt’s.” Aunt Mae said “You are supposed to stay in bed.” And Mrs. Cooley said, “The Eastern Star luncheon is Wednesday and I have to get a new outfit for the luncheon.” Aunt Mae said “You have plenty of dresses upstairs.” And Mrs. Cooley said “But everyone saw them.” Aunt Mae said you are not supposed to go out. And Mrs. Cooley said “Well I’m going anyway, I feel alright.” So she went downtown and so then I think Nellie called up to see how she was feeling and Aunt Mae told Nellie that she went downtown. Nellie asked why she went downtown and Aunt Mae said “The damn fool went downtown to get a new outfit for the Eastern Star meeting. She is going to be 82; she will be dead pretty soon why does she need a new outfit anyway?” Then Nellie said, “I know what she means, I like to get dressed up.”
E: Do you remember spending holidays with her? Which ones? Any particular memories about them?
H: Yes, all of the holidays. Nana had Christmas, Aunt Mae had Thanksgiving and Nell had Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. I remember Nell saying she wasn’t having New Year’s Day anymore. Aunt Mae like to have a drink and she would come to Nell’s on New Year’s and have a hangover from New Year’s Eve and didn’t want to eat anything. Nell would get mad and finally stopped having New Year’s. She said she wasn’t going to stay up all night cooking for people with hangovers! So she stopped having New Year’s Day. Aunt Mae never wanted to eat on New Year’s Day.
E: Did she ever speak about her husband, Claude Cooley? What do you know about him?
H: I guess she did when he died. I was too young to remember. I liked him. He was nice and he was very good looking. Tall and dark with a nice smile.
E: Do you remember any of his family besides Mrs. Cooley?
H: I just remember Mrs. Cooley.
E: How did Aunt Mae support herself after her first husband died?
H: Aunt Mae liked to sew. All I remember is she made hats and sold them from her home. She made me a pink straw Easter hat with a pale blue feather on the side. I felt so dressed up, but I also felt real self-conscious. I didn’t want to wear it. And a neighbor said to my Mother, “Oh, Helen looks so cute in that hat.” Nellie bought it from her. I don’t remember her working at other things.
E: She lived in the same house that she lived with Claude Cooley?
H: I’m pretty sure she did. I know she lived with Mrs. Cooley. I was so young then, I forget. We still lived on Filmore Street. He [Claude] would come over and play cards with Pops. So then I was only about 5 years old. She [Mrs. Cooley] lived there until I was pretty well grown up.
E: Did she ever speak about her husband, Burdette Harbison? What do you remember about him?
H: He was of average height, dark hair, nice but quiet. I liked him, but still liked Uncle Claude the best. I don’t remember what he died of, but he was in the Cook County Hospital and I remember going to see him. I forget what he died from.
E: What stories do you remember about Aunt Mae?
H: She was always full of pep, but she smoked all the time. She liked to sing and dance. She was always ready to tell someone off if she thought they were wrong. She had a lot of personality and she liked to have a drink and smoked all the time. She was very talkative. Always very nice.
E: Did Claude Cooley have any brothers or sisters?
H: Not that I know of. I was so young when she was married to Claude.
    E: What about Burdette?
H: I don’t remember if he did either. [Elaine learned that Burdette had a brother and a sister.]
E: Do you remember Aunt Mae being ill? Or, her wake and funeral?
H: I forget what you called it but her chest got full of…, something about a heart attack. She had terrible chest pains. I think something like angina. She suddenly had a heart attack from smoking and died. I had a light blue wool dress. Nell gave the undertaker my blue dress for her to wear in the coffin. I remember looking at her wearing my dress at the wake. The wake was west on Madison Street.
E: Aunt Mae was the oldest?
H: Yes, there was Aunt Mae then Nellie and then Aunt Nannie, John was the youngest. Uncle Harry, I’m not sure where he fits in.
E: Do you remember anything funny or sad about Aunt Mae
H: No, I don’t remember anything in particular. If she got mad at anyone she would tell them off and she always called them a “Damn fool.” She missed Uncle Claude.
E: Did your mother, Nell Sullivan, spend much time with her? What did they do together?
H: Lots of times, every Tuesday they would take turns phoning each other and making a date to go to Fields for lunch on Wednesday. We went back and forth to their houses for dinner. After Nana fell down and broke her leg, my Mother and Aunt Mae would take turns going over there. Nellie would do the shopping and Aunt Mae would wash the clothes and the next day Nellie would iron the clothes. One day Aunt Mae said I’m tired of running out there they should get a maid. Nellie said we can do it. But Aunt Mae said “No,” and told Uncle Harry “that you people need to get a maid.” He did, I think her name was Alma. But, Nellie still went over there. Aunt Mae didn’t. It was just the two of them because Nan had moved out west when Ruth was only about 3 years old.
E: What else do you remember about your Aunt Mae?
H: Just that I liked to be with her, she was fun. Outside of her being funny and ready to tell someone off if she thought they were wrong, I remember her smoking a lot. It was the style then but she over did it. She wound up having an angina attack in her chest and died.
E: Can you physically describe her? What did she look like when she was young?
H: She was pretty. She was about 5 foot 3 inches, nice figure. Blonde hair, I’m not sure it was real or not, blue eyes and a kind of a pointed nose. She wore her hair high on her head. I think she was a little more stylish than Nellie. Always laughing or smiling. Great seamstress, always on the go. Always ready to help or tell someone off if they got on her nerves.
E: Who would you like to talk about next?
    H: How about Aunt Nannie?19
